How it works

The defining feature of this style is simple; the shade is made with fabric sewn to internal rings for operability.

When drawn up the design allows for the folds of fabric to stack in neat rows, when let down, they hang perfectly flat allowing for colour, texture and privacy. Most roman blinds use either a cord pull or revolving chain mechanism to lift the blind.

Decorating with intention

Before you shop, make sure that you are aware of the many options available of this particular look.

Customizing and ordering a style that is unique to your interior space and personal needs is a decor savvy approach to elevating the appeal of a very well decorated space.

Finding a style:

There are several variations of the roman blind on the market: London; Austrian; festoon; and the most popular, the waterfall roman.

All originate from the three basic styles below.

Constructed flat Roman Shade:

Crisp and tailored, this look is unfussy and works well with several styles from industrial to modern and traditional. It is often paired with other drapery styles for added warmth, texture and privacy.

Fabric panels are sewn together with back bars and placed approximately 6 to 8 inches apart, reinforcing the fabric and providing better durability and structure.

Unconstructed flat Roman Shade:

This style works well with patterned textiles because there are no seams or stitching to obstruct the design of the pattern or print.

This blind is made with a single piece of fabric and has no back bars or additional panels. This basic design makes it great choice for featuring both modern graphic prints and traditional patterns.

Relaxed Flat Roman Shade:

For a look that is unstructured, light and often unlined this style is casual and shabby chic. When raised, the slip dip in the centre creates a more organic and casual feel.

Mounting options

Inside mount:

This is the most common application, the blind hangs on the inside of the frame, skimming the inside edges and close enough to block out light.

Make sure there is enough space to raise and lower without catching.

Outside mount:

Create the illusion of height and add drama to any space by hanging the shades several inches above the window frame.

Finishing touches

Explore options for embellishments by adding detail, texture, colour banding, piping, or consider topping with a valance or layer with other drapery styles to complete the look.
